New wall plate for ceiling joist to sit on - same size as joists?

I'm fixing a wall plate to the interior of a wall (using thunderbolts), I'll then use joist hangers to hang 50 by 97 (2"by 4") ceiling joists to this wall plate. (NB. the floor above is separately supported)

Can the wall plate be the same depth as the joists or should it be an inch deeper (4" by 2" or 5" by 2")?
