Joist hanger question

Why demolish the wall top, and risk more work rebuilding the loose blocks below and then mess about cutting splits, when the OP can just drop some hangers on now and jobs done?

Only because his original plan was to have a vaulted ceiling. There is a risk of dislodging blocks below, but if he's careful he'll get them off without that happening.

Then he's just got to stick on a course of bricks or coursing blocks and he's at the correct level.
