I've just had a new service pipe installed and the back filling is yet to be done (works carried out by dyno rod)

They have used an "insuduct" where the pipe exits the ground which apart from looking ugly, looks to be installed in such a way that it won't protect the pipe from freezing - looking at the installation guide the insuduct should start below ground level.

Opinions please?!

Will this pipe freeze!

I've never come across this before, but have checked on the installation instructions, it looks as though there would normally be a box above the insulation ducting. They mention nothing about back filling the hole where the water pipe comes out of the ground, but you're photo seems to suggest that the the pipe could freeze just below the ducting. Or have they taken the insulation down to the bottom of the hole, and just not bothered back filling it afterwards.

They are coming back on Monday to backfill the holes and replace the concrete where it's been cut which will go underneath the bottom of the insuduct box which you see in the photo. The box itself is full of insulation foam and completely encases the water pipe but it is limited to within the brown box and doesn't extend below it.

The actual service pipe enters the house approx half way up the insuduct box.

My concern is that where the concrete will be replaced and encompasses the pipe will be where the pipe could potentially freeze.

Having looked at the insuduct instructions again, it's possible that you're fears are grounded.

The boxing you have appears to be set into the ground, and then a capping box goes on top. You seem to have the boxing as te only componant, and no insulation down into the ground. If you're anywhere in the country North of London, then the ground around the pipes may well get cold enough to freeze the water pipes.

Have a chat with the workers, and ask to speak to someone in charge if necessary. If the workers are the ones in charge, it may be worth getting in tuch with Groundbreakers tech support, and get their opinion
