I've just replaced the thermostatic cartridge on this unit as I read that a leaking shower (its been dripping a lot recently) can be fixed by a new cartridge. Its expensive. On taking the old one out I was horrified to see all the pieces of rubber caught up in it, see picture.

I'm not sure where it all the slivers came from. (Some pieces, though the picture doesn't show this) were interfering with the 'O' ring seals and could have been responsible for the leak.

I changed the other seals. My question is about these seals, see picture..
Which way round do I insert the two seals
a) so that the chamfered end (RH of the two in the picture) bears against the rotating control mechanism
or
b) so that the end with the two raised surfaces (LH of the two in the picture) bears against the rotating mechanism?

Suggestions appreciated.
