hi guys/girls,hope someone can help me here,very strange one.the hot water stopped 6 months ago,plumber came and fitted a new valve,hot water 1 i think,and all was good until recently,it seems to be very hit and miss,the first time we got no hot water i turned up the pump to 3,next day we where getting hot water again so turned it back down to 2 again.
was ok for a few days then again no hot water one day and ok the next.
the pipes coming down into the motorised valves are boiling hot as are the valves themselves,and i mean u couldnt keep ur hand on them for more than a second,but everything below them is cold,again sometimes they get hot but never really hot
also the springs on top of the valves move from side to side but arnt they supposed to come back themselves,mines dont.
and this is after the central heating and the hot water have been on for 2 hours,also the boiler wont kick in with just the hot water set to on,the boiler will only kick in when u turn on the central heating also.
so heres some pics
A=cold pipe
B=tepid half way up pipe
C=valve[not sure which one]
D=hot valve changed 6 months ago
any help greatfully appreciated

There I was hoping this was about a Potty Puma boiler as its a few months since I fixed one!

It sounds as if the HW valve is sticking.

Read the FAQ about valves and you will see how to feel if they are open or not.

sorry to dissapoint on the puma potty boiler dude,its cause ive got a ford puma.
so had the ch/hw set to come on at 4.30am till 6,the boiler fires up no problem cause i can hear it from my bed,but still no hot water,my woman is getting a bit ****ed off with washing her hair with cold water.just after 6 i put the pump up to max[setting 3]go down stairs and put the ch/hw on at the timer,in about half an hour all the pipes are heating up nicely including the ones going into the heating tank.
now just as i turned on the hw/ch there was a gurgling sound coming from the boiler for about 10 seconds then nothing,also noticed the last time i had the pump set to max,when the boiler kicked in,in the morning the noise coming from the pipes,ie gurgling sound was loud enough to wake me,now i dont wake very easily.
so i could have a sticking valve with an air lock somewhere,ive opened the little vent screw a few times,no air,just a tricle of water,the whole system was bleed when the valve was replaced 6 months age.
does any of this make sense,cheers

have a look in the loft and see if there is water in the small tank.

Until you get it fixed you should be able to use the immersion heater on the cylinder!

I hope your Puma car is a better car than the Puma is when a boiler!

I used to drive a Ford Pubic. It was made out of old Corsairs.

Ah, the old ones are the best! :wink:

pump sounds like to me[/quote
the pump seems fine,can hear/feel it pumping the water around,going to lossen the screw to make sure theres no air in it,cheers

Does the puma go on public roads?

Because it does not seem to have a numberplate!

Frightened of the DIYnot ANPR system?
not at all agile,the no plates are blacked out as the pics where used on another forum,and i didnt want either the car or the bikes no plates cloned,and i dont have the origanls saved.

back on track with my weird heating system,both the ch and hw have been turned off since last night,i put the ch only on this morning for 2 hours and there is plenty of lovely hot water,WTF.
going to just use the ch tonight to see if it will heat the water again.
small tank in the attic has water in it.
could someone have wired the heating up somehow so both the ch and the hw are only connected to the ch,the hw turned on,on its own wont fire up the boiler and the electric switch in the bathroom cupboard is off.
if the water heats only with the ch on,then i dont mind as i can turn the rads off to stop them heating up,or is the start of more problems

Firstly, nice Tuono! I've got an 09 Factory (hence the username).

Looks like you have an 'S plan' central heating/hot water system. S plan denotes 2 motorised 'zone' valves, 1 for central heating, 1 for hot water. Sounds to me like the hot water one is sticking, perhaps intermittently at times. Has the whole valve body been changed (where it fits to the pipework), or just the silver 'actuator' (top part) of the valve been changed? if just the actuator this may not have done the job, as sometimes the paddle or ball inside the valve body becomes distorted and stops the valve from opening/closing freely. This would explain why your pipe and valve is hot, but pipework the other side of the valve is cold.

Turning up the pump speed may have forced water past the partially closed zone valve, enabling you to get hot water at the taps.

The reason for the boiler not working when just the hot water is on may be because if the valve won't open, there is nowhere for the heated water from the boiler to go and the boiler is locking out. It's best to have an automatic bypass valve fitted to the system to help prevent this happening.

I suggest you call a trustworthy plumber/heating engineer to sort this out and in the meantime, as someone else said, switch on the electric immersion heater (trace the flex from the white thing at the top of the cylinder back to the switch) and turn the hot water setting on the programmer to off.

Good luck!
