Hi, hope somebody can shed some light on this.

I have recently moved and the house has a traditional gravity pumped system with the head tank in the loft,

My question is should there be a vent pipe off the system? as there does not seem to be one although there is a take off between the pump and the three way valve which goes down into the floor.

The system works fine if a little noisier than one would expect.

any help ideas would be great

Thanks

sounds like a combined feed and vent.
the pipe from the pump going into the floor is a bypass probably fitted with a bypass valve or a gate valve

Thanks for the reply seco services, there is a gate vale fitted on the line.

should this valve be open or closed for nomal running?

thanks again

I would consider that to be wrong if there is not a vent coming up and turning down towards the header tank.

It might satisfy the safety requirement ( just ) but would not work well and could expel steam and boiling water upwards in the event of a fault.

Sometimes the heating vent is ( wrongly ) terminated over the cold water cistern!

If your feed pipe is 22mm it is a combined feed and vent which is fine, if you have a bypass on a mid position system close it, you don't need it.

What they should have put is perfectly acceptable if in manufacturers instructions. Some secify it some dont
