I'm pulling down the ceilings in my lounge/dining room as part of some renovations and wonder if there is any way to stop the noise from the upper floors when people walk on them, they are carpeted but the noise is really loud downstairs.

The max span is 4m, all floors are supported on internal brick walls, joists are at 400mm centres with proper t&g floorboards. Joints themselves are 8"x4".

The problem is weird as it feels like the floor vibrates when you walk yet the joists are all firmly fixed into the wall pockets still. Is adding noggins likely to improve the situation?

Any suggestions would be helpful while I can see the underside of the floor.
