we have a newish Combi boiler in garage. Every cold night we are woken up every hour or so by the frost protection coming on and causing huge amounts of banging and gushing in pipes, when normally the boiler and heating are quiet. Why does it do this, and is there anything we can do to stop it? Have tried anti-knocking fluid with some success.

What boiler is it exactly?

Could be the frost stat is wired incorrectly.

It should be wired in series with a pipe stat.

When frost stat kicks in the boiler should heat the rads for a short while then go off.

In that case it sounds like the boiler is being switched in for frost protection but the ch zone valve is not opening. The boiler has nowhere for the heated water to go so is overheating and banging.

Do you not have an auto bypass fitted and set correctly?
