I have read somewhere that when i install an outside tap, taking the supply from my cold sink feed that i will need to fit a non return valve on the pipework. Could someone tell me what this valve does and is it really needed?

Many thanks

according to Water Regs A double check valve must be installed internally to the feed to any outside

And also according tot he Water Regs an isolating valve must be fitted as well to turn off the supply when the weather is freezing so the tap does not freeze up.

The reason the double non return valve is required is because when you have finished mucking out your horse and leave the hose in the bucket of droppings, the supply may fail and the contents of the bucket could get sucked back into the mains water pipes.

Mrs B next door will then make a pot of tea when the supply is restored and wonder why it tastes funny!

oops

nice catch tony

Don't forget the outside tap must be earth isolated from the internal copper pipe that will be supplementary bonded, as it is outside the equipotential zone of the property!
