I’ve just moved into a new house. I’ve only ever seen the glass fiber type loft insulation before. Does anyone know what type this is?

It looks like Micafill insulation. Commonly used in lofts, but couldn't say how good it is in comparison to rockwool.

Thanks for the quick reply :)

It seems to be largely paper based. There's evidence of old newspaper in it along with grey fibres 5-10mm long. Its not itchy like glass fibre type.

The house was built in the 60s, are there any health concerns associated with this type of insulation?

Thanks again

I don't think there are any problems with it, but I'd be inclined to remove it and replace with something more efficient; obviously use a mask though.

It's paper - I remember when it was in use - paper was put through a machine and blown into the loft by a guy standing in the lofthatch with the blower hose.Leave it in situ and cover with fibreglass.
