Oak sleeper retaining wall - membrane querstions.

Morning,
Building an oak sleeper retaining wall, only about 600mm high.
Where does the membrane go? Against the sleeper or behind the gravel backfill against the soil?
Also what membrane should I use?

....bog standard black 300mu membrane will do the trick
....place directly to the rear of the sleepers about 150mm down from the top for aesthetic reasons
....tack into place.....this will keep the membrane roughly in place until you put the backfill in place
....put a drain hole in every 700mm at the base of the wall just in case of water build up

then sit back and admire with a nice cuppa
