Hi,

We have recently moved to a 3 story Victorian house, and on the ground floor there is an open fire. Directly above this, on the first floor is a gas fire attached to the wall/front of the chimney stack.

Is it safe to use the open fire below, or at least test it to see if the chimney is open? I could upload photos if this would help.

I'd be very grateful for any advice. Thanks.

hector - you must always have your chimney inspected (and maybe swept) by a chimney sweep before bringing an 'old' fire back into use. Failure to do so - remember there may be debris (soot, nests, blockages from fallen masonry, etc.) up there, could result in a chimney fire. A very, very common event when just about everybody had open fires.

No reason why your setup can't be used, but get a pro in to check first. Loads listed in Yellow Pages.
