@Stuckinarut will know far better than me, I am only an electrician, but the main problem is for a boiler to modulate it does not want switching on/off all the time.
In the main, the TRV works well. But it can't, unless linked, tell the boiler it's not required any more, to turn it fully off. But to set up a wall thermostat with a TRV so they work together is not as easy as it seems, and it is so dependent on the home.
Since getting married, I have lived in four homes, each one very different as to heating requirements. Two, a single wall thermostat worked well, the other two both have needed multi wall thermostats to control the heating. This house has three wall thermostats, plus a linked TRV head. There is no one system suits all.
I did with some success fit a wall thermostat and TRV in my mother's hall, and set them to work together, but it was not easy, and it was far simpler in this house, just fitted Drayton Wiser linked TRV head, OK still some problems, with radiator next to outside wall, but as I said, every home is different.
