HI All

Just been opening the fireplace and removing the original fire in my 1930's house when I discovered this white almost polystyrene like stuff behind the old fire.

Has anyone seen this before? is it asbestos?

I think this is probably vermiculite which is used for insulation. It has no asbestos content.

But if you are at all worried place a small block in a sealed plastic bag and take it to your council Environmental Health Office. They will give you a definitive answer free of charge. They would rather you be safe than sorry.
