Hi!

Looking for some advice. I have 2 cupboards under the stairs. One accessed from the hall & the other from the utility room. Im looking to block off the utility cupboard & open it up from the hallway.

Hoping i am explaining this right. Are we able to just create a doorway where the wall is? Or even better open it up altogether to join the existing cupboard in the hall. My dad is planning to do it for me.

Ive got some pics. Pic 1 is of hall. Pic 2 from inside the wee cupboard in the hall. Pic 3/4 utility access to cupboard under stairs.

Thanks for any help!x

That would depend on whether you need to remove any framework that is supporting the staircase structurally.

It is difficult to tell from the photos, but a suitably experienced local carpenter should be able to advise, or if not a structural engineer.

Hi Blup

Thanks. I may remove plaster for a look to see. Will get a builder / joiner round for a quote - sounds a safer bet!

one thing that many people don't do, is to ask the neighbours. Someone down the road or opposite may well have done exactly this in the past, and could say that they were told "NO" or that it was an easy job.

I don't know how it works in Scotland but you may be able to get a building control officer from the local council to have a look first to offer advice.

I will give the council a call this week - I need to check out some regs for converting utility to a loo/utility so will ask while im on. Thanks for the advice!
