i have a security light which is permanantly wired to the power supply so i cant switch it off when its windy and keeps going off and on,i want to put a switch in between supply and light so i can turn i off when i want to ,not sure how to do it ,can i just split the live and put switch there .i dont know,i dont want to have to rewire it if possible.can anyone tell me easiest way.

it should idealy have a switched fused spur

As for wiring yes you do just "break the live" but you shoud for saftey sake connect the earth too.
 
You're on the right track! A switch in the live wire is all you need.
But you will need to fit an additional 'twin and earth cable to run to your new switch, so you will have to make the connection at the juction box relating to the light or fit a new junction box
.
Remember the red wire on the new cable going to the switch should be permanent live, the black wire on the new cable coming from the switch is not a neutral, it is known as a switched live, because it's live when the switch is closed and should be identified at each end with a flag of red insulation tape.
Of course you can purchase a cable containing two red wires which makes it clear. And don't forget the earth wire

i assumed that Malo had access to the actual light cable, that is why i said what i did
