how do i join my outside cable to the main power in the house?

thanks

depends on how much power you need and size of cable etc....

wire direct into a MCB/fuse in your CU if going to garage etc

wire into FCU on ringmain if demand is upto 13A

wire into plug and plug in, again if demand is less than 13A

if you have used SWA, all methods (esp 2 and 3) will SWA to be terminated then wired by T+E or flex

note: outside comes under part P. only way out of it is to use number 3

What sort of cable is it?

What size is it?

How long is it?

What load is it supplying?

Where does it run on its way to wherever it ends up?

What type of supply earthing system do you have?

All of these questions need satisfactory answers before you get to the connecting up stage...

i have a steel reinforced cable running under back entry into garage its for lights and sockets(2) and will also be running a pond pump which is further up garden

If you don't intend plugging much in, more than the odd lawn mower or something, and less than a couple of kilowatts at a time, I'd suggest for the time being put it on a 13A fused spur, or even as sugested method 3 terminate the cable in a box, and inside have terminal block to a flex with a plug on it . (please arrange a good cable grip if you do that though - its not my prefferred route.) It is then really just a rather superior extension lead, and can be easily totally isolated if there is any problem.
If you intend plugging large fixed loads totalling 3KW or more into the sockets of course, all bets are off, and you should really have a dedicted fuseway in the consumer unit..
