I have an external pipe which takes the soil pipes from the bathroom and shower room, combines them into this one pipe and then goes to the mains drainage. The pipe is below the window of the shower room, approx half way up the house.

Currently just above the point where it joins both soil pipes, its not capped. I understand this is not ideal (smelly) , but can you advise if this could be capped with a hinged vent lid, (cheap) or whether it should be extended past roof level and left open (not so cheap).

thanks!

If it is the main and only soil & vent pipe you have then it needs to terminate above roof level and be left open-so it can vent.

I'm no drainage expert but common sense would tell me that you shouldn't have an open soil stack near a window, it should go above the gutter line a couple of feet.
I'm sure an expert will come along shortly.
How old is the house?
What is the soil pipe made of?

Yes its the only main sole pipe. I'll get a quote to get it above roof level.

Thanks for the prompt reply,

cheers

soil pipe looks newish, made of black plastic pipeing.

House is 1950's so this must have been replaced and put in like this!

It wont cost that much.

Get the soil pipe, bends, connectors and birds cap from B&Q/Wicks, make up the pipework on the ground first, using fairy liquid to lubricate the connecters (makes it easier to push pipe into connectors). Lean out of upstairs window, wife holding your legs, then again thinking about it, maybe someone you trust. Or better still, beg, steal borrow some ladders, job done. £35 maximum.
