overboarding.

hi,i am in the process of overboarding a lath and plaster ceiling, this is due to the fact i have removed a plasterboard partition to make my kitchen/lounge open plan and the ceiling has been damaged by the 6 inch nails holding partition to ceiling.
the existing ceilings are in fair condition so i want to overboard.
my question is i will be tapeing and easy filling the tapered joins and direct painting if i get these joins done well i will be happy but if they are carp can the ceiling be skimmed.
i have already found very helpfull advice here regarding edge trims to keepmy cove intact, which i am useing.
thanks in advance.

redundant at 56 plenty of time to diy now.
