I have a push-button type cistern, but recently the water inlet mechanism started making a noise. I tried to re-adjust small tube feeding from base, but this broke. Now, after I re-attached the tube to the base, the water overflows into the overflow pipe. Can somebody give me advice on what to do?

Shut off water supply to cycstern, flush it, empty remainder with sponge, remove offending component, go to merchands with it in hand, "one of these thingermyjiggs please and a pack of 1/2" fibre washers?" go home and repeat in reverse, renewing fibre washer on tap connector, don't overtighten it, just nip it up, too little is better than too much, adjust on test.
