I've actually solved my problem, but I'm mystified as to how it lasted this long, let me explain.

In my house hold too many showers and the shower and upstairs water would shut off, completely, hot an cold. and you wouldn't get anymore water until the following morning. So recently after being nagged enough by the wife I set myself to googling and figuring out an answer. I eventually track down that my loft water tank had a faulty ballcock value. It was jammed shut and wasn't letting a drop out. I have since replaced it. All good.

But what gets me is that it had been like this for months, and yet somehow every night the loft tank would somehow refill itself for a new day.

I know from the testing I did prior to changing the valve that literally not a drop of water was coming out the valve when the tank was empty, so its not like it needed a full night of drip drip to get there.

I also know that this lack of water was not correcting itself up until 1am, the latest I stayed up to check, but I also know I had a full loft tank by 8am.

So what on earth was happening to fill a tank with a stuck valve between 1am and 8am. The only think I can think of now is that during the night the water company increases the water pressure, or maybe all my neighbors stop using water and the increased water is enough to let a trickle of water back in, but only during the wee hours when I wasn't looking.

Or water gnomes?

Valve slowly seized up , water slowly filled up overnight until it finally seized solid , no mystery .

yup, I'd go with the "increased pressure overnight" forcing the valve open option ... if it was filling overnight every time without fail.

Or had it actually stopped working completely?

Is the system open vented on the heating side?

Basically does it have a smaller header cistern for the heating?

If so what is the level of the cistern like compared to the cold water cistern?
