i need to piant my panel doors and skirtings and architraves with a white satin finish.

They are currently varnished, but the previous owners have ensured that the top of the skirtings and sides of the architraves show every crazy colour choice they made over the years - under the varnish that they latterly put on. Thanks!

how much prep can i get away with to get a 'reasonable finish'?

was planning to sugar soap thoroughly, then wire wool the whole lot to take the shine off the varnish.

Is that enough?

neighbour gave me 2.5 litres of 'one coat' satin they had left over. (probably 2.25l left!)

I am dubious about these 'one coat' products. Should i cough up, or go for the freebie?

thanks in advance!

Dont use one coat anything..load of cr*p. Just goes on like treacle. Better having more thinner coats of a decent brand.
