serveral years later i now need to repaint the doors. i bought a tin of Ronseal satin mahogany varnish. can i just paint straight over the gloss varnish with the satin varnish??

Give them a gentle Flat off with some wet'n'dry and then wipe over with white spirit. Then you can coat them up with the satin no problems.

thanks robbie. whats flat off with some wet and dry mean?? i didnt understand that term...

Wet and dry is the name/make of some fine paper to rub down with. Flat off means to rub down just enough to take the gloss /shine of the doors.

As Lyngarth says..Its Wet ' n' dry because you can use it with water, this enables you to get a super smooth finish. It also stops it clogging up.
