Painting an old cupboard black

Hi Guys I have a fluval roma fish tank which sits upon its own wooden stand like this...

I want to paint it matte/satin black, can you all advise the best way to do this with the best finish?

I was thinking of spray paint, but that could get messy. Can I use a sponge roller and some satin paint? Bearing in mind it will hold a fish tank it could get a little wet from time to time.

A primer followed by a couple of coats of oil-based eggshell applied with a 4" sponge roller should do the trick
