I will soon be painting coping's on a wall outside, the coping's have become pitted and paint never seems to stay on for very long, so firstly how do i fill in all the pitting and what primer / undercoat would you recommend before the topcoat is applied?

It would be hard to repair any pitting, as the repair will be that small that it is likely it would not bond for any long period of time.
If you are looking for a true stone colour and textured paint stonelux would be the best to use, but it will need to be spray painted for best results, but can be brush painted. They also supply a basecoat primer.
If you are after a stone colour but without the same stone texture Keim would be a good choice, these are paints that are used in the concrete and stone industry to paint masonry, they are not cheap,
but will last.
If you are looking for a cheaper alternative Sandex would do the job.
