Painting external fascias, one coat or undercoat?

Spoke to the tradesman again. He said the paint should last 3-5 years depending on weather.

He offered two options.

1) One coat of dulux

2) An undercoat, then an overcoat.

Advice?
 
As Bosswhite says, Spot prime any raw wood, a good rub down, full undercoat, rub down and a full coat of gloss to make sure it will last a reasonable amount of time.
