painting kitchen doors and vinyl

please help i have just bought a house with a horrible kitchen.The kitchen is solid but it has dark wood i would like to paint a lighter colour.There is a vinyl trim around the top of the cupboards and at the sides i would like to paint this also.Can anyone recommend how to do this without it chipping?

You need a good base coat to stick to the existing stuff

Id go for a good wash down...rub down all over with fine wet and dry paper then a coat of dulux supergrip or zinseer
