I got some shelves cut from some 18mm MDF I had hanging around.

I want to paint them a similar finish to the walls they're going to be hung on which have Dulux Luxurious Silk on. Can I just water this down for the 1st coat and then apply a 2nd coat neat?

Or should I buy a specific MDF primer/undercoat?

Can I use some of this BAL acrylic primer I used on my plasterboard walls before tiling them?

Cheers!

the joys of mdf are you can paint it with whatever you see fit. if your only keeping towels and such on them emulsion is fine but if you are keeping things that can scratch i would go for an oil based product like gloss or eggshell
