I have recently bought a new house and want to decorate the bathroom. I am trying to do it as cheaply as possible.

The previous owners have put up varnished wooden cladding. I simply wantto paint over this in white but I am unsure of a few things.

Is it essential to sand the varnish down or can I just paint over it with bathroom paint?

Do I need an under coat?

Thanks.

Vigarous sand down, then something like Zinsser Bin primer, oil based undercoat and then your preferred topcoat.

Pity you`re not painting/re roofing the ponderosa  YEE-Ha  Go with paul c from the Uk ;) I would use 2 coats of eggshell over the b.i.n - purely a matter of choice tho.
