Painting new skirting

Just fitted new skirting, bare timber. Going to paint with water based satin wood. What's the best way to minimise coats - go straight for the satin wood or put on some kind of under coat / whitewash?

if you want a decent finish then don't try cutting corners with self undercoating or one coat paints.
Knotting on Knots
one coat acrylic primer,
light sand
undercoat however many coats to get colour flat, light sand if grain is still raised between coats.
2 x topcoat

Definitely do the prep and get the undercoat a flat even colour. satin, water based can sometimes not cover that brilliantly and patchy undercoat will sometimes grin through.

A bit late but if I was fitting new skirting /architrave, I always prime/ undercoat the timber first, before fixing. It is easier and then just touch up the cuts

I would definitely use knotting on the bare knots as even though they appear dry , they will bleed through at some point.
Then to save coats of paint and time I would use this http://www.zinsseruk.com/product/allcoat-solvent-based/ as it will do the job and last.

Thanks all, have ordered the knotting. Would you definitely not just use water based emulsion as the under coat? Was hoping to go with that as have plenty already in the house - would it leave a bad finish using this?

wouldn't recommend it, but I'm sure we have all done it at some point.
