Hi there

I've just bought a house that needs doing up.

My dad is a fantastic decorator and his opinion is that you always do all the rubbing down filling etc. Then a good quality under coat followed by a quality gloss. He also prefers the longer drying stuff (16 hours I think).

I certainly don't want to disrespect my dad - but as I'm going to be doing the decorating myself (he's in his 70's now) - do I need to do all this, or would I get a decent finish with the all-in-one gloss/undercoat?

Grateful for opinions.
Thanks
Terri

Your dad is right but the modern gloss dries much quicker. Dont use one coat stuff it goes on like treacle and looks awful !!

Thank you. Really appreciated. I'll do it the proper way, but will use a quicker drying gloss. Thanks again.

Normal gloss like Dulux or Crown or Leyland will dry in about 4 to 6 hours in a warm environment.

Trade paint, trade paint, trade paint...I think you get the idea!

Seriously I've never regretted anything so much as not discovering about trade paint until we'd decorated half the house!

Trade paint ? Is it as good in quality ?

I don't think my dad uses trade paint.

Explaination from dulux trade website.

Question
What is the difference between Dulux Trade paints and Dulux Retail paints?

Answer
The key difference is the consistency of the paint. Dulux Retail paints are ready for use straight from the can. Many professional decorators, however, like to thin their paint before use and so Dulux Trade paints have a slightly different formulation. However, both Dulux Trade and Retail paints are manufactured to the same high specification.

I have used www.decoratorsdepot.co.uk to get trade paint before. They will mix colours to order too.

Hi, spoke to my dad on the trade paint and he said yep no problem.

He's retired now but still does the odd bit, he told me of a story recently when he bought a massive 25 litre drum/tub of magnolia - and he got it for £10. Think this must have been a one off though.

Thanks for all your replies guys.

Regards
Terri
