painting onto stripped plaster

I've stripped the woodchip off my walls (at last) and the plaster underneath is fine, but there are a lot of flakes of wallpaper paste/glue still on the plaster. How should I best prepare the walls for painting? Would sugar soap and sanding down be enough, then undercoat? I don't really want to put lining paper on.

brush with plenty of hot water and use a broad flat scraper. you will be surprised what a lot of old paste and paper fragments it takes off.

once you get the hang of a scraper you can also use it to smooth fresh plaster or filler when you have filled cracks or chases

sandpaper just makes dust and can leave visible scratches in soft fillers
