painting over previously papered walls?

Hi all,

I was looking at the recent debate re PVA etc on new plaster and Fred Flintstone (20/6/07) seemed to say if painting over stripped walls previously papered, paste residue will remain causing cracking/grazing over time.

FF suggested the only prevention was to skim the wall, IE, create a 'new plaster' situation.

Does anyone have any alternative suggestions to skimming?

Hi Mr Landlord,

I'm only a plasterer, a painter and decorator would probably be better placed to answer the question but I was talking from personal experience.

The only options I can think of are ether lining the walls before painting or, but I've tried this without success, scraping every little bit of the wall, sanding a bit and then washing thoroughly with sugar soap. However, like I say, I've done this before and managed to leave some paste behind.

I don't know why paste residue has this effect on paint, it just seems to react with it over time.

Nowadays I would have just skimmed it because it's quicker (and much less dusty) for me to skim a wall than it is to sand it properly.

Hopefully someone will be along soon to provide a viable solution.

thorough preparation of all surfaces is the vital first step in redecoration,if you neglect this stage subsequent finish will be rejected so wash all surfaces make good all surfaces, then use stabilzing primer then paint. if walls are rough and unsightly then put p.v.a on top of primer and cross line with lining paper then paint paper for a nice finish. trust me it will look wonderful.well worth the effort.

Easier and much better to skim it Billyo. You can't straighten walls out with lining paper.
