Painting plumbers mait

The outlet from a toliet goes into the cast iron soil pipe. The joint is made with 'Plumbers Mait' (the non setting sticky stuff in a tub, not the setting stuff in a tube). The old one was filthy, because of course Plumbers Mait attracts all the dust and fluff going. I carved the top layer off and remade the joint.

In order to keep it clean, and just for appearance, I thought about painting it. According to Evostick's website it'll take any sort of emulsion or gloss.

Anybody had any success with this?
