Painting putty

I have just finished re-puttying a sash window. I now need to paint the window (I already primed the wood with a water based exterior primer before the glass and putty went In)

Will it be okay to use water based exterior primer and topcoat when painting over the putty?

No, you must use an oil based primer over putty, and make sure the putty has skinned over before painting, putty usually needs between 2 and 4 weeks to cure before painting.
