painting skirting stairs

Hi im shortly about to paint the stairs skirting with carpet how do i paint this without getting any paint on the carpet? what are your tips?

Masking tape is the only safe way to go. When painting, brush away from the tape rather than towards it or you could get paint seeping through to the carpet. Remove while the paint is still just slightly tacky, as if you let it dry fully the paint could peel when you pull the tape away.
