Painting skirting with carpet down

How do you pros paint the skirting when you dont lift the carpet.?

I have bought one of those plastic paint shields, not used it yet, does anyone use them.

Do you remove it before the paint dries. I have just gone round the room with tape, so I am ready to go.

Vacuum the edge of wall, apply masking tape, paint skirting boards, wait until the paint is dry then I go around with a stanley blade and cut the paint line from the skirting board to the masking tape. Then remove the tape.

ok, ta for that, I thought you might remove tape whilst the paint is still wet, so the paint dosnt dry over it.
