Painting Varished Stairs

Would like to paint certain areas of our Varished staircase.
Is it best to lightly sand, clean and use something lime zinsser bin to prime it and then a high quality gloss?
 
yes that's what i would do, but i would also use an undercoat then gloss, or two coats of gloss.
