Painting woodowrk

Hi all

I have been told a couple of different things about painting woodwork. When repainting skirting or a window with gloss or satin, do you need to use a separate undercoat. I have been told by some people 'yes always undercoat' and some others have said 'once you have lightly sanded the wood, the old paint will act as an undercoat'

Can anyone lay this to rest?

Satin does not require an undercoat if its going on previously painted wood. Gloss may need an undercoat if the old surface is too dirty. yellowed. chipped etc. If its clean and in good condition a light sanding to provide a key is all thats required.

Undercoat is a liquid filler. Anyone that doesn't realise that is missing a major trick.
