Help! Is there such a thing as a pan connector with a rodding eye? We have a WC which is a good distance from the outside soil stack which is backing up and a "snake doesn't seem to do the job.

What's backed up? The WC, the soil drain to the stack or the stack itself?

Are any other wastes or drains backed up?

Any signs of gulleys overflowing?

Have you checked down any available manhole or inspection chamber?

There are three WC's on the main soil stack and the others are fine. The problem one is the top one. I have tried a "snake" through the "U" bend without success but don't know if the obstruction is in the internal run or the top section of main stack.

Unlikely to be blocked in the vertical section, is the pan blocked solid, or does it slowly drain over time? If latter, then possibly a snake will go 'through' the blockage without actually moving it, you'll need to remove the pan and investigate further.

If you use those rim blocks they can wedge in the pipe, tissue etc builds up and blocks the pipe. (Or small hands flush things they're not supposed to!) If you remove the pan, are you likely to be able to see along the pipe to the stack?

Thanks Hugh. Did not really want to go that route as WC is close coupled and will need water supply disconnecting as well. OH WELL in for a penny :)

If you go the remove the pan route go with much caution because you risk some possible sewage spurting out. Bale the pan and the cistern before disconnecting.

I assume that the WC is close to the outside wall.

Pan is about five feet from outside wall and does drain eventually after about 15 minutes. Connector is a 90deg.

Get one drain rod and a rubber disc for the end - plunge the pan with that

90 ° 'Kwikfit' reduces slightly to allow for the fins to fit inside the soil pipe, wouldnt surprise me if it's blocked immediately behind the pan on the reduced section. My only worry with plunging it Nige, if there is a rim block (or other foreign object) in there, the OP may just shove it along and cause issues elsewhere......

Wait until the pan has drained, bail out the remainder, and bail out the cistern before, very cautiously, moving the WC off the pan conn. Tap the 5ft of soil pipe for a hollow, empty sound.

If no result after examining the pan trap and pan spigot, then, if you have 110mm push-fit, you could open up at the wall and flashlight a view - sometimes, the poured lead joint at the conn to a CI tee branch, or CI bend, has strayed into the pipe and it catches paper etc.

If, everything works out OK, then start drainage testing/flushing from the bottom floors and work up to the top.

Problem solved. Thanks guys, especially Hugh. After having to drill off the screw heads and man-handle the pan to one side the 90deg coupler was removed and the blockage was found just after the joint. Now all back together and smelling of roses.
