Hi, Andy,
do you mean skimmed onto plasterboard, or backed and skimmed onto block?
About a week for the second option this time of year,

Its skimmed over what was already there, onto block i think, thats what i thought, someone told me you coudnt paper onto skimmed walls for 6 months, I was a bit shocked, they said it would cause the plaster to crack is there any truth in this?

Andy

No, that is ballcocks, and anyway how would you know after you had papered over it?

Id line it first..the absorbency of the wall and shrinkage could be a massive problem.

Would painting the wall with a mist coat and then normal coats of matt emulsion avoid the need to line, while nothing is in the room it would be easy to put a few coats of paint on

If I understand your question correctly..
Yes, it's quicker to paint than to line and paint.

I mean, instead of lining before putting the finish wallpaper up, could i paint the wall in matt, therefor reduce the suction of the wall on the paper, size the wall with wallpaper paste and then paper onto that?
without any of the shrinkage problems

No.
Don't paint the wall and then size it as there's no sense to it. If you must paper the wall without lining, then just size it, let it dry and paper it.

papering good walls is sacrilege. Just paint them.

Yeah that's what I mean. Stick with paint.

Its fashion to have a feature wall, and it keeps all the painters and decs busy, and when people no longer want it, they will be busy again........ same cycle over and over again........................

I saw some genuine 60s wallpaper the other day. Black and orange geometrics - and guess what? I loved it.
