My lad has forgotten his password for windows 7 on his laptop and is unable to log on.

Is he the only administrator set up on it?
I don't know if it works for Windows 7, but I know on XP, if you start in safe mode, you can go into an Administrator account (that isn't normally shown in normal startup) and go into User Profiles and change a password from there.

The OP's son wouldn't be the admin, so just log in as admin, and reset the password.
Or boot up in safe mode, edit user accounts..
I think there is also a security question to remind you of the password?
