hi. I'm making a patio, onto which i will build a brick BBQ. However i'm not sure how to lay the slabs. The slabs are very thick, about 60mm thick, they were piled in the garden when i brought the house, i assume they are some kind of road paving slabs, as the previous owner was a builder.

I want to lay them onto compacted soil, but not sure how to go about it.

Firstly to i need to lay any kind of weed proof sheeting?

After this, do i use a dry mortar mix or wet mortar mix? and to what thickness? The area i'm looking to lay is about 2 meters by 3 meters.

Thanking you in advance.

First you need to dig off any soft topsoil down at least 4 inches.

For a basic job simply lay the flags on a wet mortar bed of 4:1 cement to grit sand with a drop of plasticiser in the mix.

For a real proper job dig out to a total of 8 inchs and put in and compact a 4'' sub-base of MOT Type 1 and lay as above
