I recently purchased and had installed a staircase runner. I have a lower stair with 7 steps which comes to a landing makes a 90 degree turn and goes up another 5 steps. I chose an almost square (12" x 12.5"), almost symmetrical pattern so that the turn up the stairs would not be noticed much. After installation I noticed there was no pattern matching done from the last step to the riser below the landing and from the landing to riser to the upper staircase. I had the flooring people come out and look at it and they told me "it couldn't be done". They said the landing has to be done first to center the pattern to the upper and lower stair. I absolutely understand that. They then said they had to work from the bottom step up to the landing and they have no way of knowing where the last step will end. I have attached images where each set of stairs meets the landing. Is this really unavoidable? I seem to think a better estimate of the amount of carpet required for each step could have been made to make the bottom cut at a place where at least it wouldn't be as far off as it is.
