Paving up to (brick) house - gap?

When laying a patio up to a (brick) house is it best to pave right up to the house bricks (inc. grout) or should a gap be left.

As long as the paving is below the damp proof course and sloping away from the house there shouldn't be a problem laid tight to the house. :)

Tight against the bricks is no problem, however, I'm pretty sure you're supposed to ensure that the surface of the paving is 150mm lower than the damp course. But in my experience this isn't always adhered to.

Thanks for the replies. I was just concerned about making a "mortar joint" against the brickwork (and wondering if sand/gravel would have been better) but I guess its fine.

I am actually only renewing what is already there which is probably many years old and some of the slabs have dropped/moved and the mortar joints have "fallen out".

I have cavity walls BTW, ref. the diagrams.
