Hi.any dugestions pls.we had loft converted 4yrs ago.outside walls are half stone and render would say render.it was not smooth render though.i do know what it is called.its the kind they put in a small machine and wind it so it throughs it on first coat.at the time of convertion i decided to have old one removed and have new pebble dashed.its only 4years and pebbles has started falling.front and rear is not bad but side is exposed to wind and rain.few large chunks have fallen.i can see the first coat is not scrached at all.i am intrested to have conservatory built on rear side but pebbles are falling all the time whenits windy.i am thing have it done again.should i go for render or pebble dashing.if i go for render then what advise can u give ie,how thick it should be,time between first and second coat etc.thanks

Hi Saleem, i think what you're describing is tyrolean finish and not pebbledash. Tyrolean finish is sprayed/flicked onto a smooth render with a hand held "tyrolean machine". It is the machine sprayed finish that'll be flaking away from the wall, exposing the smooth render underneath.
You say you would like it to be done again, but if i were you, i'd get in touch with reputable local plasterer/builder, let him see the job, see what he thinks, and take it from there.

As i mentioned earlier we had tyrolean before but had removed and had new pebble dash done.i now regret having tyrolean removed because it was perfect and very hard.family wanted pebble dash.we have semi detach on corner and side is exposed to wind and rain.its this side which is worse.every time when its windy and rain whole chunks come off.it is very clear that there is no scraching on first coat.also i think the guy who did it did not use enough cement.when it comes off its like pile of sand just crumbled off.

Ok,,, thanks for that. Sounds like a poor job was done. As i said yesterday, get some advice from reputable local builder/plasterer. Let him come and see the job and get his opinion. Get 2 or 3 lots of opinion, that'll be even better.
