PEG HOLES IN OLD BEAMS?

We've moved into a house dating from the mid 1600's. Several of the beams and particularly a very long heavy beam across the fireplace has peg holes running along the length of it at intervals. The holes are roughly an inch across. Could anyone tell me what were they for? - Were the beams originally used for something else and then recycled? I would be really interested to know. Thanks very much

A previous househad parts which could be traced to about 1605. The visible roof timbers in our master bedroom had square mortises which was where a hand weaving loom had been located whilst the floor of the upper storey (added in the late 18th century we were told) were obviously recycled - we think from a boat. Your local museum service might be able to help, although publishing a photo might help identify these markings here
