Penetrating damp, stone wall semi-basement

Hi, we are just about to move into a new (old) house with solid stone external wall and by the looks of things no dpc.
One of the walls is showing signs of damp about halfway up the ground floor wall as per the picture.
Anyone got and ideas how best to deal with this issue as digging out and tanking the outside wall is not an option as it’s build against quarried stone and has a path close to it.
Would lime render and breathable paint be an option if internally.
Anyone had similar problems like this.

If you lime plaster the wall, it will breathe. But the problem is that your wall is wet outside from the raised levels, and in contact with the inner wall. I'd say your only option is to install some sort of water resistant barrier on your inner wall ie tanking membrane, then plasterboard on top (I'm no expert on the tech available). Your wall will be wet, which you could live with if you take measures.
