pergola horizontal bar

hello, my first post to a very knowledgable forum. A customer has asked me to replace the bar. How do I support the rafters whilst changing over.I can use an overlong 4x2 to temporary hold them up but cant find a pair of
anything to hold this 4x2 in the hire shop.Advice appreciated.Dean.

make a pair of deadmen of suitable length. Cut them slightly longer than needed, knock them towards the vertical until they take the weight, then secure them to prevent sliding. When finished, knock them further from the vertical to release.

nail a couple of battens to your temporary beam to prevent them sliding out of place.
