Can anyone please advise if there would be a benefit in using a Petrol type for cutting back a Leylandii hedge. Advice I have todate would seem to suggest no benefits to be gained in using a petrol type but that the make is probably of paramount importance.
I currently use a Bosch AHS 650 Xcel 550 watts 24 mm spacing 65 cm length but struggle badly to get the task completed -I feel sure that there must be a better piece of kit available -please comment.

I've had a petrol one for a few years now and I won't be going back to electric. Flippin cable trailing all over the place, looking out for it all the time in case I cut through it. I never did cut it but women do that sort of thing regularly. I no longer need to roll out my extension cable and then roll it all in again.

Generally petrol or more long term longer use machines. No way i am going to waste my time rolling out extension cords in areas 50m plus from the nearest socket. Also i need to cut for a whole day non stop without it over heating and i need powerful sharp cutters that i can service and keep for years.

But i cut 1000's of metres of hedging a year where as most people dont. For me it is all these factors why i need good petrol trimmers but if you have to cut 50m of hedge a year electric ones are probably good enough. It's just a case of can you justify the extra cost if you don't need the above functions?

Lastly i'd say the best thing you can do is sharpen yours before you buy others and they may well feel like new.

If you will use them regular, big garden, then petrol all day long, i don't have a big garden, but my mower, strimmer, hedge cutters, all petrol.

Twice as quick, twice as strong

My missus bought her own hedge cutters, electric, as the petrol
frighened her, told her, WATCH THE CABLE!, made her look in my eyes, and i said it again ! It lasted 20 mins

Go for a gardenmaster GMHC. Very good, reliable petrol jobby. Must be good because most of the tool hire shops use the Gardenmaster stuff!
Let me know if you can't find a sensibly priced one as i know someone who does them at realistic prices!

Pandy - petrol every time! I struggled for years with an electric hedge trimmer and the dragging of the extension lead but bought a Ryobi Expand-it bush cutter about 4 months ago. They were on offer from Screwfix for £99 and included a FREE hedge trimmer ... it's brilliant! I bought 3 extension poles with it and a pruner attachment (small chainsaw) so I'm able to reach very tall stuff (and low). All my other garden stuff is petrol so I should have done this years ago but trimmers & pruners were very expensive.

Just noticed that Screwfix are still doing the offer .
